Amrita Rao was born in 17 June 1981. She is an Indian model and actress. She made her Bollywood debut in 2002 with “Ab ke Baras”. She is best known for her performances in Ishq Vishk (2003), Masti and Main Hoon Na both in 2004, Blockbuster romance Vivah (2006), Jolly LLB and Sayagraha both 2013. She won the Stardust Best Actress Award for Shyam Benegal’s Welcome to Sajjanpur in 2008.


She has won and been nominated for several awards including two nominations of Filmfare in Best Debut and Best Supporting Actress categories. Painter M.F. Hussain’s proclaimed muse and the winner of the Dadasaheb Phalke Academy Award for the Best Actress in Vivah.


Amrita Rao is popular as Bollywood’s quintessential “Girl next door”. She ranked among the Times of India’s 50 most beautiful faces in 2011. Amrita belongs to Konkani family originally from Karnataka, but rose in Mumbai-India. Her Father owns an advertising agency in Mumbai. She gained a degree in Psychology from Sophia College. Her younger sister, Preetika Rao, is a model and India TV Actress currently seen in Beintehaa, which airs on Colors TV.



She auditioned for an advertisement for Fairever Face Cream, while studying in Sophia College. She participated in many commercials and photo shoots. Her appearance in two commercials Cadbury’s Perk Karwa Chaut ad and Bru Coffee advertisements helped her to attract by the Bollywood directors for film casting. She also participated in number of music videos by artists like Alisha Chinoy. Even after becoming a well-known actress in Bollywood, she continues do model and walk ramps for designers, as a celebrity guest.
